A U.S. aircraft carrier is in the Persian Gulf for the first time in two months to help enforce the no-fly zone over southern Iraq.

The USS Independence passed through the Strait of Hormuz late Wednesday with about 75 aircraft, said Lt. Cmdr. Bruce Cole, a Navy spokesman. It was accompanied by a frigate, two supply ships, an oiler and an ammunition ship.It replaces the USS Abraham Lincoln, which sailed out in early October to provide air cover for U.S. troops and other U.N. forces in Somalia.
