Do enough citizens recognize the gravity of the fiscal crisis facing America? Will a sufficient number face up to the painful remedies? These might be life or death questions for our republic.
The Concord Coalition is a group of responsible citizens recently formed by Warren Rudman (Mr. Republican) and Paul Tsongas (Mr. Democrat). The Concord Coalition's aim is to seek bipartisan support for its goal of eliminating annual deficits by or before the year 2000.In Utah, we have our own Rudman (Norman Bangerter) and our own Tsongas (Cal Rampton). Bangerter and Rampton serve as co-chairmen of the Utah CC advisory board.
If we are unsuccessful, interest on the debt will soon become the largest item in our federal budget.
Concord Coalition recognizes that no realistic plan is feasible without Social Security means testing. Cuts would begin with Social Security beneficiaries earning around $40,000.
We owe it to ourselves and our children to act now - before it is too late.
