We were all saddened to witness the tragic fire at the Governor's Mansion. The priceless interior that was destroyed will be dearly missed by the citizens of Utah. We are grateful that no physical harm came to the governor's family or staff.
While the loss of the state treasures in the mansion is great, this event, we believe, helped us appreciate more what a great treasure we as state citizens have in the first family of Utah. The courage of Mrs. Leavitt in handling the immediate disaster and the dedication of Gov. Leavitt in fulfilling his official duties by addressing the Legislature shortly after touring his devastated home was indeed remarkable.
These acts of dignity and integrity in fulfilling their public and private roles at this time and in many other instances restore our confidence in our public officials and gives us immense pride to be citizens of the great state of Utah.
For their fine examples in face of significant adversity we wish the Leavitt family both solace in their personal losses and divine comfort for a Merry Christmas.
