Mother Teresa has another accolade: the UNESCO peace education prize for her work among the poor. A $50,000 check was presented Saturday to the Nobel laureate by Federico Mayor, director-general of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.

Mother Teresa "exemplifies the values and purposes of peace education," he said. She is a "symbol of all mothers in the world dedicated to the welfare of all, especially the poor and the destitute."The award was announced in 1992. Mother Teresa, 83, said she will spend the money on a new home in Calcutta for the mentally and physically handicapped.
