The Ku Klux Klan erected a cross early Monday on Fountain Square in downtown Cincinnati, about 24 hours after it said it would set up the display.

The city issued the Klan a permit to erect the cross at 12:01 a.m. Sunday. Several protestors showed up early Sunday, but the Klan did not, delaying the action for more than 24 hours.Last week, U.S. District Judge Carl Rubin ordered Cincinnati officials to allow the KKK to erect a wooden cross at Fountain Square.

Rubin rejected the city's effort to prohibit the display under an ordinance passed in October that forbids the erection of displays that amount to "fighting words."
