Denzel Washington says his roles in "The Pelican Brief" and "Philadelphia" are helping to make Hollywood colorblind.

But he's not handing out much credit to those who cast him in parts not necessarily written for black actors."I'm marketable now," Washington told the Orange County Register. "It's not like they're doing me a favor by giving me these roles."

He teams with Julia Roberts in the legal thriller adapted from John Grisham's "The Pelican Brief."

In the AIDS drama "Philadelphia," with Tom Hanks, Washington plays a homophobic lawyer.

"Frankly, I guess we did picture a white guy in the role," said "Philadelphia" director Jonathan Demme. "But when Denzel said he was interested, there was no question we wanted him."
