An Orem teen died Sunday afternoon from injuries sustained in an auto accident Saturday near Lehi on I-15.

Killed was:Vern Stratten, 16.

Stratten was riding in a southbound Ford Explorer driven by Mark Vernhaaren, 16, Orem. The vehicle drifted across three lanes of traffic and struck an unattended pickup truck in the right emergency lane about 5 p.m., trooper Steve Helm of the Utah Highway Patrol said.

The Explorer then swerved left across the road and ran into the dividing concrete barriers before colliding with another southbound car, driven by Steven Terry of Orem, Helm said.

Stratten was first taken to American Fork Hospital with head injuries but later was airlifted to LDS Hospital, Helm said. Vernhaaren was transported from the scene to American Fork Hospital. He was listed in satisfactory condition Monday. Terry was not injured.

The youths were on their way home from a ski trip when the accident occurred, Helm said. UHP funneled traffic to one lane while rescue workers extricated Vernhaaren from the vehicle. Neither was wearing a seat belt.
