I don't often disagree with your editorial comments, but I must do so with the "How to save taxpayers $1 billion" comment on Dec. 4.
First of all, it is evident the writer is not familiar with the subject. He or she writes of the military post exchange and the commissary as if they are the same. Not so; each has its own purpose.Proceeds of the post exchange save the taxpayers many dollars in supporting the health and welfare of the active duty military and their dependents. The commissary also contributes, especially to those of the lower ranks, in alleviating their financial strains.
I suggest the writer investigate both entities to be fully aware of their value to the morale of military personnel, not all of whom are earning on a par with their civilian counterparts.
In doing so, obtain figures from, or through, congressional offices, rather than from the associations representing the so-called civilian competition.
