Fire damaged the University of Utah's Behavioral Sciences Building Saturday about 1 p.m. but was put out by the building's automatic fire sprinkling system.
University Fire Marshall Mike Halligan said faculty members compiling grades were in the building when they smelled smoke and called for help. Most of the damage to the building was caused by water from the sprinklers. Halligan said it appears that a discarded match or cigarette caused the fire, which ignited boxes of printer toner cartridges stored near the building's loading dock. "Chances are, the person didn't even know what they did," he said, estimating the damage would total several thousand dollars.
The fire knocked out electricity in the building and was restored Sunday morning.
