The City Council has approved a six-year contract with Browning-Ferris Industries (BFI) of West Valley City for solid-waste collection, set to begin March 1.
That means Syracuse, which has contracted with Clearfield for garbage collection since 1988, will be looking for another waste-collection agency.Jack Bippes, Clearfield City manager, said collection fees for residents will remain at $5.97 a month for the first three years.
Clearfield opted to get out of the garbage-hauling business to avoid buying needed equipment that would have increased its collection prices by about $2 a month per household.
Bippes said crews need about four days to complete garbage pickup for Clearfield, and BFI may eventually add enough extra equipment to do the job in one or two days.
BFI will also conduct the annual spring and fall cleanups for Clearfield residents. The company is also purchasing all of the city's garbage-hauling equipment as part of the deal. No city employees will lose their jobs because of the change.
The Clearfield contract is BFI's first in north Davis County, although the company has been doing extensive garbage hauling for local businesses for many years.
Jan. 31 will the last contract day Clearfield crews will provide garbage service in Syracuse.
The Syracuse City Council has been studying several bids it received from private haulers and plans on making a decision by the first of the year.
The next scheduled council meeting is Jan. 11, but the council may meet in a special session before the end of the year to make its official selection.
Syracuse will be required to pay approximately $1,300 a month to Clearfield for the next five years to purchase 1,500 trash containers from the city.
