The Utah women's basketball team's woeful shooting took an even worse turn, Monday, when the Utes broke the school record for fewest points scored in a 71-39 loss to Montana, before a crowd of 3,353 spectators.
Utah, which lost its third game in a row and dropped to 2-5 overall, broke the point low it set in the season-opener against Western Kentucky. The Utes managed just 14 points in the first half, 10 by the freshman duo of Hilary King and Angie Thill.King finished the night with a game-high and career-high 19 points and 13 rebounds, while Thill contributed a career-night of her own, with seven points and nine rebounds. The freshmen's marvelous showing was buried in a flurry of Lady Griz buckets. At one time, Montana went on an 18-0 run and held Utah without a point for over nine minutes.
"Hilary and Angie were just great," said coach Elaine Elliott. "Everybody but our freshmen plays like they don't know what's going on. It's like my older kids have steel casings around their wrists. It's (their shooting) become a mental thing."
Malia Kipp scored 12 points for the Griz, who improved to 6-1.
