Baseball cards have become a national craze, and the Davis County Sheriff's Department is trying to tap into that popularity with its own trading cards of police officers.

According to Sheriff's Detective Dave Bremer, West Point, the trading cards are being used in police dealings with children and as a promotional tool.Bremer said the cost of printing the cards is $115 for 1,000 cards, and he's been able to get businesses to pay to have their names on the cards. He has also approached the West Point City Council as a potential sponsor.

He said West Valley and Salt Lake City are the only other Utah police agencies using police officer trading cards.

"For the younger kids, this is making quite an impression," Bremer said.

He said deputy Mike Olsen is in charge of the trading cards program in the Davis County sheriff's office. He said Olsen was also recently named by the governor as Utah's D.A.R.E. officer of the year.

The West Point Council decided not to sponsor the cards - at least not until Bremer has contacted more area businesses. But the council favored the trading card idea.

"Whatever you spend on the cards is worth it," said council member Vern L. Thurgood.

Bremer said the "60 Minutes" TV show has also expressed interest in Utah's police-officer trading cards for a future program.
