Residents of unincorporated White City soon will have their own water district, but the future remains uncertain.
Salt Lake County commissioners still could work out a deal that would allow either Sandy or the Salt Lake County Water Conservancy District to provide for the needs of the tiny area that has consistently resisted annexation by Sandy city. The commission voted Monday to allow White City residents to form the water district. That district will buy the White City Water Co., which has provided for the needs of the area, plus a few nearby Sandy residents.
But commissioners also voted to make themselves the district's board of trustees until area residents officially elect officers. In the meantime, the county hopes to make a deal with either Sandy or its own district.
White City residents decided to form the district after Sandy City tried to purchase the water company that served their neighborhoods. They say Sandy could not give them fair representation and would impose higher rates.
But Sandy officials are concerned because the district would include some parts of their city. They also say the pipes in White City are old and need replacement and that the water system wouldn't provide adequate fire protection.
