The busiest section of road in the city is Hill Field Road, between Main Street and the Layton Hills Mall. Construction last fall that widened the Gordon Avenue intersection and added left-turn signals has improved the congestion, but some traffic jams continue because the Hill Field Road traffic signals are not synchronized with those on Main Street.
Layton City officials have been pressuring the Utah Department of Transportation to tie the lights together because both roads are state highways.Alex Jensen, Layton City manager, recently reported to the City Council that UDOT has committed to doing this synchronization in the spring or summer of 1994.
"This should further enhance traffic flow in the area," Jensen said.
Because of the addition of the left-turn signals at the Gordon-Hill Field Road intersection, Doyle Talbot, Layton police chief, also believes accidents in the area have decreased.
Talbot said seven of the past nine accidents at that intersection were caused by drivers making unprotected left turns.
