U.S. troops from the 53rd Area Support Group in Bad Kreuznach rescued at least 14 people from the flooding Nahe River in Bad Kreuznach and surrounding villages. Soldiers also helped sandbag houses in Heidelberg after the Neckar River rose to 15 feet above normal. The Rhine began flooding the cities of Cologne and Koblenz, and water crept into the parking garage of the federal parliament in Bonn. It was the worst flooding in many cities since 1947. The death toll is at least five, and more rain is forecast through Thursday. The Mosel, Neckar, Nahe and other rivers feeding the Rhine were receding as cities farther north began to be hit by the floods.
