Media, industry, children, individuals and government have received awards for outstanding volunteer work as part of the "Take Pride In Utah" program.
The program is aimed at improving the environment. It is a partnership of federal, state and private agencies.Huntsman Chemical Corp. was recognized for its waste recycling/waste minimization program, which diverted 49 million pounds from the landfill and saved $4.8 million in 1991.
Utah Mountain Bike Association was honored for developing and constructing part of the Bonneville Shoreline Trail as a non- motorized trail to preserve the historical integrity of Old Deseret in and around Pioneer Trail State Park.
KSL Television received accolades for its Spirit of the Nineties, an ongoing volunteer-based program designed to create opportunities for individuals and corporations to participate in a variety of improvement projects.
Kids Organized To Protect our Environment (KOPE), a group of students at Hawthorne Elementary School, has donated more than 3,500 hours over the last three years to develop Hidden Hollow, a children's nature park and outdoor classroom.
The Salt Lake Ranger District, Wasatch-Cache National Forest of the USDA Forest Service was honored for its volunteer program designed to improve forest lands and facilities by using a diverse range of individuals.
Paul Sjoblom was honored for volunteering more than 6,500 hours to Utah's Abandoned Mine Reclamation Program, which has saved the program $275,000 and cleaned-up dangerous mines. Award winners and their categories include: constituent organizations and civic associations - Park City Rotary Club and Utah Mountain Bike Association; business/corporations - Huntsman Chemical Corp.; youth - Monticello Ranger District; media - KSL's Spirit of the Nineties; education institutions - Kids Organized to Protect our Environment (KOPE), Snow College/USDA Forest Service and Sorenson's Ranch School; individuals - Charley and Anne Bertola, Allen and Virginia Crane, John Peckham, Jim and JoAnn Schreiner, Paul L. Sjoblom.
Others include: public/private partnerships - Ashley Stake LDS Church MIA Women's Camps, Paul Martinez; Ogden ranger district/volunteer program - Uintah Stake LDS Church MIA Women's Camps; local governments - Lynn Pett/Murray City Jordan River Parkway; state governments - 115th Engineer Group (combat), 116th Engineer Company CSE, Company D 1457th Engineer Battalion; federal governments - Heber Ranger District/Uinta, Logan Ranger District/Wasatch-Cache, Ogden Ranger District/Wasatch-Cache (multiactivity), Ogden Ranger District/Wasatch-Cache (Kid's Fishing Day), Salt Lake Ranger District/Wasatch Cache.
