A man who said he was stabbed by a hitchhiker died Wednesday after spending more than three weeks in the hospital.

Salt Lake police are investigating his death as a homicide.Mike D. James, 40, Payson, drove into a truck stop at 850 W. 2100 South on Nov. 28 and asked for help. He said a hitchhiker had stabbed him in the head while he was driving on U-201 about 12:30 p.m.

After he was stabbed, James apparently stopped his van and the hitchhiker fled on foot, police said.

James was taken to LDS Hospital, where he remained until he died.

Detectives were not able to question him in the hospital because his condition deteriorated quickly.
