The City Council upbraided Mayor-elect Randy Fitts Wednesday night, passing a resolution condemning his firing of six of seven department heads.
Fitts, who takes office next week, was conspicuously absent from the meeting, which drew nearly 100 citizens, far more than the typical turnout for council sessions. The seven-person council, which undergoes its own metamorphosis next week when three members are replaced by newcomers, has no official say in the firings. But the issue has gotten Fitts' term off to a troubled start.

The mayor-elect's new administrative appointments must be approved by the council, a process that because of the firings will likely be marked by some tension.
