Challenge grants totaling $300,000 have been awarded by the National Endowment for the Humanities, Washington, D.C., to two Utah groups.

The American Society for 18th Century Studies, Logan, will receive $50,000, which will support an endowment to scholars for travel to and studies at archives and special collections.Dixie College, St. George, was awarded $250,000 to support an endowment that will provide instruction for college and high school humanities faculty. Also, the grant will support a weeklong interdisciplinary forum that promotes dialogue with nationally known specialists.

More than $44.7 million will be generated nationwide from non-federal contributions to 36 research, educational and cultural institutions, said NEH chairman Sheldon Hackney.

Unlike other National Endowment for the Humanities awards, challenge grants require that recipients raise three, and in some cases, four dollars in non-federal contributions for every federal dollar provided. Challenge grants are made annually.
