Two acclaimed movies, Steven Spielberg's "Schindler's List" and Jane Campion's "The Piano," received six nominations each Wednesday, including best drama picture and best director, for the 51st annual Golden Globes.

Their competitors for best drama film honors were "The Remains of the Day," which had five nominations total, "In the Name of the Father" and "The Age of Innocence."The awards, given by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, are thought to be a bellwether of the Academy Awards, the Hollywood film industry's most prestigious honor.

The Golden Globes will be presented Jan. 22 in Beverly Hills.

Unlike the Oscars, the Golden Globes include a separate set of awards for comedy or musical films. Competing for that best-picture award were "Dave," "Mrs. Doubtfire," "Much Ado About Nothing," "Sleepless in Seattle" and "Strictly Ballroom."

Because of the genre distinctions, Tom Hanks was given two chances to win best actor prizes, in the comedy realm for "Sleepless in Seattle" and in drama for the just-released "Philadelphia."

The nominations showed the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's preference for smaller-budgeted, so-called art films such as "The Piano," which shared this year's Palme D'Or at the Cannes Film Festival with "Farewell My Concubine."

In the top drama categories, the more recent releases such as "Schindler" fared much better than films brought out early in the calendar year.

The association also honors outstanding television shows and performers.
