After being "lost" for more than 30 years, the thin-spined porcupine was rediscovered in the tropical forests of eastern Brazil. The species, Chaetomys, was feared extinct. Scientists know so little about the creature that they are not sure it is a porcupine at all. The nocturnal rodent taxonomically appears to fall somewhere between the porcupine and the spiny rat.
