A French firefighter navigates his boat past three horses after La Lys River overflowed its banks at La Gorgue Friday. Waters from Europe's worst flooding in nearly a quarter century began receding in some places Friday. Some Christmas goodies were delivered by dinghy, but there was more mopping up than merrymaking. At least seven deaths were blamed on floods from this week's heavy rains. Tens of thousands of people were evacuated, and damages totaled tens of millions of dollars in Germany, France, Belgium and the Netherlands.
