A group of feminists and population-control advocates is opposing the appointment of Boston Mayor Raymond Flynn as ambassador to the Vatican because of his strong views against abortion.

A joint statement opposing Flynn, a staunch Roman Catholic, has drawn signatures from 30 organizations, including the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, the Association of Reproductive Health Professionals, and Zero Population Growth.The opposition is believed to be the first time an appointment was opposed because of the candidate's views on abortion.
