A 17-year-old Idaho Falls, Idaho, youth has died after falling more than 1,000 feet while climbing in Grand Teton National Park.

Park spokeswoman Linda Olson said Corbin Rich died Friday when he fell after descending from a successful climb of the Grand Teton. She said he slipped on snow and fell into a gully early Friday afternoon.Rich, who was climbing with Brian Wood of Idaho Falls, tried to stop his fall by using an ice ax. But he lost the ax and fell 1,000 to 1,500 feet.

Park rangers and mountaineering guides recovered Rich's body about 4 p.m. Olson said Rich apparently died instantly.
