Bartley E. Day was chosen Oct. 4, 1994 to progress beyond this life, after a long struggle with diabetes and it's subsequent complications.
Born September 21, 1923 in Fairview, Utah, to Eli A. and Lucille Madsen Day, his life was one dedicated to service to his family, country and the Lord.Bart was a 1921 graduate of South High School in Salt Lake City. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, after which was appointed to and graduated from West Point Military Academy, Class of 1949. He married Jane Irene Olsen in the Salt Lake LDS Temple, December 29, 1949. Together with a growing family, they resided at various location assignments such as: Giessen, Budgingen, and Mannheim Germany; Ft. Sill, Oklahoma; Ft. Collins, Colorado; Thule, Greenland; Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas; Norfolk, Virginia; Aberdeen and Ft. Meade, Maryland; and Seoul, Korea. Throughout his 35 year military career he was a recipient of: The Legion of Merit, Army Commendation Medal (3 times), Army Good Conduct Medal, Joint Services Commendation Medal, American Campaign Medal, Army Meritorious Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal, National Defense Service Medal (2 times), and Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal.
Bart's final military assignment was a Professor of Military Science at Brigham Young University (ROTC) in Provo, Utah for 5 years. Following his retirement as a Colonel in 1977, he served 11 years at BYU, finally as Asst. Dean of Student Life and career education counselor. While there, in 1985 he received his PHd. in higher education administration.
Throughout his adult life, Bart served in several callings for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In addition to serving numerous times in his favorite calling as a teacher, he was a bishop, branch president, or counselor (17 times); called to a stake presidency, mission presidency, and high council. He was active in his community service as well, serving as president, vice president and secretary for Kiwanis International, and district chairman for the Republican party.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Irene; daughters, Victoria Hamilton (Glade), of Leadville, Colorado; Janice Wright (Brian), of St. Charles, Maryland; sons, Wayne Day (Nancy Stringham), of Sandy, Utah; Dean Day, of Irvine, Calif.; six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Carl and a daughter, Valerie.
There will be a viewing held Friday evening, October 7th, 6-8 p.m. at Anderson & Sons Mortuary, located at 49 East 100 North, American Fork. Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 8th, 11 a.m. at the LDS Chapel, located at 120 North 400 West, Orem, Utah. Interment will take place in Alpine, Utah, following the funeral.
The family thanks the efforts and comfort given by the nurses and staff of Community Nursing and Home Care Services.
All the family members deeply mourn the loss of his presence, strength and spirit. They eagerly look forward to their final family reunion.
