Jack Bowring Watkins, M.D., 76, died November 22, 1994 of a heart attack after a long illness.
He was born August 3, 1918 in Brigham City, Utah to Norman Victor and Nola Bowring Watkins. He married Vanja Louise Yorgason on May 27, 1964 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.He spent his early years in Brigham City, graduating from Box Elder High School in 1936. He attended the University of Utah, received a B.S. from Utah State Agricultural College, a B.A. from the University of Dubuque and graduated from the University of Louisville School of Medicine in 1951, where he was also student body president and listed in "Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges". He served in the Eastern States LDS Mission from 1939-1941. He was a veteran of World War II and served as a lieutenant and chaplain in the Navy.
He retired after 40 years practice at LDS Hospital. He was Chief of Surgery at Primary Childrens Hospital, president of Utah Division of the American Cancer Society in 1974, Fellow in the American Society of Abdominal Surgeons and Fellow in the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons.
He served in the bishopric in the Capitol Hill 2nd Ward, on the High Council in the Salt Lake Stake and was a High Priest and Executive Secretary in the Ensign Peak Ward at the time of his death.
He was greatly loved by his family, friends, colleagues and patients.
He is survived by his wife Vanja of Salt Lake City; children: David Jack Watkins and his wife Michelle, Salt Lake City, Linda Budge and husband Larry, Bloomfield Hills, Mich.; Jane Shropshire and her husband Edwin, Provo, Ut., Janell Watkins and Emily Watkins both Salt Lake City; his mother Nola Bowring Watkins, Mendon, Ut.; brothers: Norman B. Watkins, Provo, Ut., Vernon B. Watkins, Phoenix, Ariz., and Richard B. Watkins, Mendon, Ut. and his father and mother-in law, Robert Milton and Norma Johns Yorgason.
Funeral services will be Monday, November 28, 1994 at 12 noon in the Ensign Peak Ward Chapel, 125 E. North Sandrun Rd (940 North). Friends may call at Larkin Mortuary, 260 E. South Temple, Sunday evening from 6-8 P.M. and at the Church Monday from 10:30 A.M. to time of services. Interment Brigham City Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggest contributions be made to the LDS Hospital Foundation.
