John McNamara, assistant commissioner of the Mid-American Conference, was named associate commissioner of the Western Athletic Conference Wednesday by WAC commissioner Karl Benson.

McNamara will be responsible for corporate relations, marketing and promotions, including implementation of a national awareness campaign for the 16-school "New WAC," scheduled to begin operations July 1, 1996. McNamara is scheduled to assume his new duties on January 16.The 32-year-old McNamara joined the MAC staff as director of media relations in 1991. He was promoted to assistant commissioner in 1992.

Prior to joining the MAC, McNamara worked at the University of Toledo sports information office for 10 years, including three years as director.

A native of Toledo, Ohio, McNamara graduated from the University of Toledo with a bachelor of arts degree in communications.
