Recent letters regarding the music and venues for the West High School Christmas concerts exhibit a misunderstanding of the concept of tolerance.

Many letters refer to tolerance as if it were a one-way street contending that the minority should be silent and passive and tolerate the will of the majority. Our divinely inspired Constitution dictates in the area of religious practices that the majority does not rule. The rights of everyone to practice their religion must be protected. Government through the Legislature or through a public school must not impose one set of religious ideals nor favor certain beliefs over others.

Tolerance means that the religious majority should be mindful of and respect the ideals and rights of the minority.
