South Salt Lake police are looking for a man in an apparent stabbing Wednesday night.

About 10 p.m., South Salt Lake officers responded to an apartment near 280 East and Truman Avenue (2330 South) and found a carpet layer, 32, with a large gash on his left hand, a police report said. The man told police he had promised to pay another man $75 for helping lay carpet in one of the apartments, the report said. When he couldn't pay, the other man became angry, grabbed a butcher knife and swung it around.

The carpet layer grabbed a chair and shattered it on the other man's back, the report said. The man holding the knife then allegedly sliced open the carpet layer's hand, severing some tendons, before leaving with another man.
