When Oscar ballots are mailed in the coming weeks, "Forrest Gump" will be riding a Golden Globe wave.
The Tom Hanks movie collected a leading seven nominations for the prize ceremony that precedes - and often parallels - Academy Award nominations.The Globes, which are chosen by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, will be awarded Jan. 21. Oscar nominations are set for Feb. 14.
Unlike Oscar's, Golden Globe voters make nominations in two categories - dramatic films and comic or musical movies.
In addition to "Forrest Gump," the Golden Globe nominees for best dramatic movie were "Legends of the Fall," "Nell," "Quiz Show" and "Pulp Fiction," which received six nominations.
For best musical or comic motion picture, the nominees were "The Adventures of Priscilla: Queen of the Desert," "Ed Wood," "Four Weddings and a Funeral," "The Lion King" and "Ready to Wear."
"Forrest Gump" also was nominated for best dramatic actor (Hanks), best supporting actress (Robin Wright), best director (Robert Zemeckis), best screenplay (Eric Roth), best supporting actor (Gary Sinise) and best score.
"Pulp Fiction" collected nominations for best dramatic actor for John Travolta and best director and screenplay for Quentin Tarantino. Uma Thurman and Samuel Jackson were nominated for their supporting roles.
The nominations for best dramatic actress were Jodie Foster for "Nell," Jessica Lange for "Blue Sky," Jennifer Jason Leigh for "Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle," Miranda Richardson for "Tom & Viv" and Meryl Streep for "The River Wild."
Best dramatic actor selections, in addition to Hanks and Travolta, were Morgan Freeman for "The Shawshank Redemption," Paul Newman for "Nobody's Fool" and Brad Pitt for "Legends of the Fall."
Nominated for best musical or comic actress were Geena Davis in "Speechless," Andie MacDowell in "Four Weddings and a Funeral," Shirley MacLaine for "Guarding Tess," Jamie Lee Curtis for "True Lies" and Emma Thompson for "Junior."
Best musical or comic actor nominees were Arnold Schwarzenegger for "Junior," Jim Carrey for "The Mask," Johnny Depp for "Ed Wood," Hugh Grant for "Four Weddings and a Funeral" and Terrence Stamp for "The Adventures of Priscilla: Queen of the Desert."
