Luminaries line a street in Alpine on Christmas Eve Saturday in the city's version of an old Spanish tradition to re-enact Mary's and Joseph's search for lodging in Beth- lehem. At least 25,000 candles were set along streets and driveways to transform Alpine into a city of lights. The celebration began three years ago when two women wanted to find a quiet, peaceful way for families and neighbors to celebrate Christmas. They also thought Christmas' true meaning was overlooked in the yule rush.
