I am saddened but not surprised at the passage of GATT. Every single member of the Utah congressional delegation in both houses voted for it. Sens. Hatch and Bennett even voted to bust the budget over it.

Congratulations, Utahns, you now get to compete with over 1 million Chinese slave laborers, Mexican auto assembly line workers who earn a few dollars an hour and millions upon millions of other workers in other countries whose leaders care little for life or liberty. In addition to our falling standard of living, we will have the privilege of paying for litigation on both sides in a dispute against ourselves.

Every staffer that I talked with from the offices of Rep. Hansen and Sens. Hatch and Bennett told me that our sovereignty would not be diminished under GATT. Their arguments were disingenuous.

Utahns, you have just allowed the federal government to effectively eliminate the only legitimate and constitutional way of raising revenue, which allowed the federal government to operate essentially in the black for over 100 years without any income taxes. When you finally perceive the decline in the purchasing power of your income and the increase in taxes at every level of government, maybe you will start to take an interest in the divine principles espoused by the Founding Fathers in the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence.
