Metropolitan Opera tenor Stanford Olsen, in town to solo in this week's Tanner Gift of Music concerts (see adjoining story), will conduct a master class Tuesday, April 19, at the University of Utah.
The 8 p.m. class will take place at the newly remodeled Voice Box on the corner of University and 100 South, following a free recital by soprano Joan Mabe at 6:30 p.m. in Room 300 of Gardner Hall.A graduate of the U., Olsen made his Met debut on an hour's notice when he filled in for an ailing colleague opposite Joan Sutherland in Bellini's "I Puritani." He has subsequently sung opposite Marilyn Horne, Kathleen Battle and Frederica von Stade and made his European orchestral debut in 1989, as tenor soloist in the Berlioz Requiem with the Berlin Philharmonic under James Levine.
