The Green Bay Packers signed Tampa Bay running back Reggie Cobb as an unrestricted free agent Friday, giving the team greater flexibility going into Sunday's NFL draft.
The team did not release terms of the deal but published reports said Cobb agreed to a two-year contract worth $2.2 million.Cobb, 25, is the team's second unrestricted free agent acquisition of the week. The team signed Houston defensive end Sean Jones on Monday for a reported $7.8 million over three years.
The 6-foot, 215-pound Cobb, a 1990 selection of the Buccaneers, rushed for 1,171 yards on 310 carries in 1992, seventh in the NFL. He gained 658 yards last year on 221 attempts while slowed by a sprained knee that kept him out for four games. His best performance in 1993 was 113 yards against Detroit.
"Our feeling has always been that in the Central Division, next to (Detroit's) Barry Sanders, Reggie Cobb is the best runner," said Ron Wolf, the team's general manager. "He has a great chance to become a 1,000-yard rusher, barring injury."
