BYU's Ryan Hall was selected the WAC Eastern Division player of the year in balloting by the league's head coaches Tuesday.

San Diego State pitcher Heath Hayes was named the Western Division player of the year.Hall, a junior designated hitter from Springville, led the WAC in hitting, slugging percentage and RBI. He finished the regular season batting .459 with 25 home runs and 72 RBI. Nationally, the BYU slugger was ranked first in home runs and third in RBI.

Freshman of the year honors went to Travis Lee from San Diego State in the West and New Mexico's Travis Young in the East. For the complete list of honorees, see page D4.

The WAC also released its 1994 softball postseaon award winners as selected by the league's coaches. Heading the list are WAC player of the year Amy Timmel, WAC freshman of the year Ali Andrus and WAC coach of the year Jo Evans - all of the University of Utah.

Timmel, a three-time first-team all-WAC pick from Sandy, tied for the WAC batting championship with a .500 average. She set or tied conference records for batting average, hits, triples and stolen bases.

Andrus posted a 17-3 record on the mound for the Utes and recorded a 0.64 earned run average in conference play. She also led the league in strikeouts.

Evans is in her fifth season with the Utes (154-98). She directed Utah to a second-place WAC finish at 46-10/22-4.
