Actress Anita Garvin Stanley, best known for playing the female foil in dozens of Laurel and Hardy films, has died in Los Angeles after a long illness, it was announced Saturday. She was 88.

Stanley died July 7 at the Motion Picture and Television Fund Hospital in Los Angeles, hospital spokeswoman Carol Kinsey Pfannkuche said.Stanley was cast by director Hal Roach to play opposite Stan Laurel in comedy shorts even before he teamed up with Oliver Hardy.
