Unsigned rookie quarterback Heath Shuler is nearing a point where he won't be able to compete for the starting job because of missed practice time, Washington Redskins coach Norv Turner said.
Shuler, the team's No. 1 draft pick from Tennessee, has been holding out for 12 days since training camp began July 21."If he got here in the next day or two, we still have a good week of practice with a lot of learning, a lot of teaching, not being concerned about a game," Turner said.
"But then we go a period of 11 days when we play on Monday night, we play on Friday night and we play on Thursday night. So the practice in that period isn't going to be suited for getting a young quarterback ready."
Team officials and representatives for Shuler talked over the weekend, but no progress was made in the negotiations after some key differences were narrowed Friday.
