President Rex E. Lee honored a number of Brigham Young University faculty, administrators and staff members during the opening session of the Annual University Conference Monday.

The Karl G. Maeser Distinguished Faculty Lecturer Award, the university's top academic honor, went to Kimball Harper, a professor in the department of botany and range science. He will deliver his lecture Nov. 9 at 8 p.m. in the Wilkinson Center Memorial Lounge.Karl G. Maeser Excellence in Teaching Awards went to Juliana Boerio-Goates, chemistry; Gary Bryner, political science; Jay Fox, English; Boyd Randall, accountancy; and Sally Todd, educational psychology.

Outstanding professional performance was honored with the Karl G. Maeser Research and Creative Arts Awards, which went to Robert Conlee, physical education; Robert Marshall, art; and Brent Webb, mechanical engineering.

The Wesley P. Lloyd Award for Distinguished Faculty Service, named for the former BYU dean of students, went to Fred Gowans, history. The Phi Kappa Phi Award went to Tom Brown, French and Italian.

Karl G. Maeser General Education professorships were granted to Jae Ballif, physics; Madison Sowell, French and Italian; and Larry Wimmer, economics. Alcuin Fellows for this year include Gerald Armstrong, mathematics; Gary Booth, zoology; William Hamblin, history; Ralph Hancock, political science; Larry Peer, humanities; and David Taylor, design.

This year's Alumni Professorship, awarded by the BYU Alumni Association, went to Grant Von Harrison, instructional science.

Science honors included the Technology Transfer Award, given to Henry N. Christiansen, civil engineering; the Sponsored Research Achievement Award, which went to William W. Winder, zoology; and the Sigma Xi Lecturer, one of the university's top science honors, awarded to Erin D. Bigler, psychology.

The Fred A. Schwendiman Award, the top honor for university staff members, went to Gaylene Harward of the Cougar Club, while J. Wesley Sherwood of Risk Management received the Ben E. Lewis Award for outstanding contributions by an administrator.

Previously honored with Presidential Appreciation Awards were administrators and staff members Carolyn Tuitupou, Kenneth D. Lindquist, Penny Morrell, Carol Hardman, Gary Kramer, Patricia Williams, Shirleye Alex Hunter, Connie Redd, Christine Burner, Ferrin Orton and Jill Fielding.
