A majority of voters in Massachusetts agree Sen. Edward Kennedy has improved his image but still feel the time has come for him to retire, a new poll showed Monday.

The Boston Herald-WCVB poll said the image makeover has not provided a major boost to Kennedy's re-election campaign against Republican challenger Mitt Romney, the son of former presidential candidate George Romney.Kennedy and Romney were in a statistical dead heat, according to two polls released Sunday. The Boston Globe poll had Kennedy ahead 48-46, but the Boston Herald poll for the first time had Romney leading, 44-42.

Monday's poll indicated Kennedy's character problems were not an overriding issue in the campaign.
