Yutaka Sado, a 35-year-old conductor from Japan, has been declared the winner of the first Leonard Bernstein Jerusalem International Music Competition. Sado, a native of Kyoto, was chosen over 16 other finalists.

The Leonard Bernstein Jerusalem competitions focus on different aspects of music each year. Next year's will be for composers, followed by singers.The winner receives a prize of $25,000.
