William B. Lockhart, 89, died in Salt Lake City, Utah, Monday, December 18, 1995.
Bill was born May 25, 1906 in Des Moines, Iowa to William J. and Jennie Lockhart. He graduated from Drake University in 1929, was ordained a Minister of the Disciples of Christ in 1930, and graduated from Harvard Law School in 1933, where he also received a doctorate of law in 1943. He practiced law in Louisville and Des Moines before he was appointed Professor of Law at Stanford University in 1938. He served as an officer of the Navy during World War II. He was appointed as a Professor of Law at the University of Minnesota School of Law in 1946, and served as Dean from 1958 to 1972, guiding the school through two decades of growth and development. In 1968, he was appointed by President Johnson to the U.S. Commission on Obscenity and Pornography, which he served as chair, and he was president of the American Ass'n of Law Schools in 1969. He retired from the University of Minnesota in 1974 and enjoyed a second career as a professor of Constitutional Law at the University of California Hastings School of Law for 20 years, finally retiring at the age of 88. Bill Lockhart leaves a legal legacy as author of numerous law review articles, and co-author of a constitutional law textbook used in law schools all over the country. He completed his contributions to the eighth edition just before his death. Bill has a lecture hall and a scholarly lecture series names in his honor at the University of Minnesota School of Law.Bill was married 40 years to Mary Evangeline Lockhart, and 21 years to Mary Lou Lockhart. He loved to pass his summers enjoying his family and working at "the Island", his summer home on Burntside Lake near Ely, Minnesota. He moved to Utah in 1994 to be near his family, and made many wonderful friends in a short time.
Bill is survived by his wife, Mary Louise Lockhart; son, William J. Lockhart of Salt Lake City; daughter, Jonell Kirstensen, Kerteminde, Denmark; four grandchildren, Laura, Bill, Ann and Zoey; his daughters and sons-in-law, and many others who loved him.
There will be a memorial service on Friday, December 22, 1995 at the Northridge LDS Ward Chapel, 2135 E. Pepperwood Dr., where he was baptized recently.
