Our loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather, Bartel Van Oostendorp Jr., completed his earthly mission February 3, 1995.
He was born May 17, 1895 in Rotterdam, Holland. He was the eldest son of Bartell Van Oostendorp Sr. and Maria Antonette Eielst. He was married to Catherine Elizabeth de Bruijn, who preceded him in death July 21, 1961. Their marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple in 1938. Also preceding him in death was Sjaan Van Oostendorp who he married September 1, 1971. She passed away June 19, 1990.He is survived by six children: Marie A. Nelson, Johanna Blake, Margaret Britt, Richard Lee Van Oostendorp, Catherine Averill and Albert Zylstra; 35 grandchildren, 94 great-grandchildren, 13 great-great-grandchildren; sister Margaret Leydsman; many nieces, nephews and in-laws. A son, Bartel Van Oostendorp III also preceded him in death June 7, 1988.
He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served the church in many capacities. He was on the high council in the New York Stake, Burbank Stake, and the San Fernando Stake. He was also active in genealogical work and programs.
He helped many Dutch saints with their travel plans to Salt Lake City. He also organized many clothing drives during the war years to be sent to the saints in Holland.
Services will be held Wednesday, February 8, 1995, at the Highland Park Ward, 2535 South Douglas, at 11 a.m. Friends may call from 6-8 p.m., Tuesday, February 7 at Deseret Mortuary, 36 East 700 South, and one hour prior to services at the church. Interment, Salt Lake City Cemetery. Funeral directors, Deseret Mortuary.
