Durham reportedly on his way out at Georgia
ATLANTA - University of Georgia basketball coach Hugh Durham has been asked to resign, The Associated Press learned Saturday night.
The university scheduled a news conference for Sunday but could not confirm nor deny the report, said Norm Reilly, assistant sports information director.
But a source speaking on condition of anonymity confirmed that Durham was out. Neither Durham nor athletics director Vince Dooley could be reached immediately for comment Saturday night.
Durham, 57, has a 298-216 record in 17 years at Georgia and picked up the 500th victory of his 29-year career this past season.
Georgia's 1990 and 1991 NCAA tournament berths followed the Bulldogs' first-ever Southeast Conference regular-season championships, but his teams have faltered since.
Last May, athletics director Dooley did not roll over his contract, describing that as a show of concern with the direction of the basketball program.
The Bulldogs finished 18-10 this season and lost in the first round of the SEC tournament.
Durham spent his first 12 years, from 1966 to 1978, at Florida State, his alma mater.
His career record was 528-311. He coached eight NCAA tourney teams, seven NIT teams.
Nose takes the charge
Phoenix Suns center Danny Schayes on Hakeem Olajuwon's sixth foul - a blow to Schayes' snout - in a Phoenix win at Houston: "My nose didn't move. It definitely had position."
