The Spokane Spokesman Review earned nine first-place awards, the Deseret News garnered four and The Salt Lake Tribune got three in the annual Associated Press three-state journalism competition.
The awards were presented Friday night at the annual Utah-Idaho-Spokane Associated Press Association convention in Salt Lake City.Deseret News staffers winning first-place awards are:
- Arts critic Jerry Johnston, for his reviews of books and theater.
- Sports columnist Brad Rock, for work that included profiles of former Utah Jazzman Darryl Dawkins and Ladell Andersen, former basketball coach at Brigham Young University and Utah State University.
- Photographer Jeff Allred, for a photo essay on a night in the life of LDS Hospital's emergency room. Allred also won a prize for spot-news photography.
- Staff writer Karl Cates, for a story about Jazz star Karl Malone's Louisiana roots and his life outside basketball.
The Deseret News led Utah newspapers in first-place honors in the contest. It won seven other awards too, repeating a performance last month in which it collected top honors in a similar event hosted by the Society of Professional Journalists.
Other staffers recognized by the Associated Press:
- Washington correspondent Lee Davidson, for investigative reporting on U.S. Cold War secrets regarding nuclear, germ and nerve-gas testing in Utah.
- Sports writer Loren Jorgensen, for his coverage of BYU football.
- Staff writers Steve Fidel, Carma Wadley and Chris Hicks for their stories on post-war Vietnam.
- Artist Robert Noyce, for graphic design.
- Sports writer Doug Robinson, for assorted feature columns.
The awards were handed out in Division A of the 1995 Utah-Idaho-Spokane Associated Press Association, which is open to newspapers with circulations of more than 50,000.
