Three Brigham Young University students are among 670 college students nationwide studying abroad this fall as winners of the prestigious Fulbright Award.

Dale Lawton of Provo, Jonathan Green of Goleta, Calif., and Therese Foote of Tucson, Ariz., received round-trip air fare, tuition and living expenses enabling them to further their studies in another country."It is a marvelous experience for our students to study abroad in countries where they can best help their careers," said Paul Hoskisson, Fulbright program adviser at BYU. "This is not just a wonderful opportunity to visit another country, it is also a wonderful experience to have on a resume."

Lawton will study Arabic at the University of Jordan in Amman, Jordan, and also plans to research the role of religion in Jordanian politics.

Green is studying German at the University of Bonn. While at BYU, he was a member of the intercollegiate College Bowl team.

Foote is studying Hebrew with an emphasis on the classics at the University of Hamburg in Hamburg, Germany. She received her bachelor's in philosophy at BYU.

To apply for a Fulbright Award, students should contact Paul Hoskisson at 1-801-378-4329. Applications for the 1996-97 academic year are due Monday.

The Fulbright Awards were originally funded by S. Congress to give Americans an academic experience abroad. Today the program funds graduate students and professors and also brings professors from other countries to the United States to lecture.
