SKILES RETIRES: Scott Skiles, who signed with the 76ers on Dec. 12 in hopes of bringing maturity and a stabilizing influence to a faltering backcourt, retired Friday night before their game with the Vancouver Grizzlies.
"I always said I wouldn't play for the money," Skiles, 31, said as he stood outside the Sixers' locker room at General Motors Place. "I'm not effective like I used to be. It's hard for me to stomach. I could stick around and collect a paycheck, but I'm not going to do that."PRICE ACTIVATED: Washington Bullets guard Mark Price was activated from the injured list Friday but isn't expected to play for at least another week.
His place on the injured list was taken by guard Calbert Cheaney, who has strained ligaments in his right ankle.
The Bullets also waived Bob McCann, who was acquired Oct. 18 from Milwaukee for Kevin Duckworth. McCann played in 19 games for the Bullets this season, averaging 2.9 points and 1.3 rebounds in 9.2 minutes per game.
PISTONS: The Detroit Pistons on Friday waived guard Stephen Bardo and forward-center Rodney Zimmerman, both of whom joined the team as free agent tryouts in training camp.
HAWKS: The Atlanta Hawks on Friday released forward center Tim Kempton, a five-year National Basketball veteran signed as a free agent December 14.
CELTICS: The Boston Celtics activated rookie forward Eric Williams on Friday and replaced him on the injured list with center Alton Lister.
