Kevin Hodson earned a shutout in his first NHL start Saturday night, turning away 20 shots as the Detroit Red Wings beat the Chicago Blackhawks 3-0.

Vladimir Konstantinov, Sergei Fedorov and Vyacheslav Kozlov scored for Detroit as the Red Wings snapped a two-game winless streak. The goals by Konstantinov and Fedorov came 21 seconds apart late in the second period and broke a scoreless tie. Kozlov scored on a breakaway midway through the third.Hodson, a 23-year-old rookie called up from Detroit's Adirondack minor league team when Mike Vernon went on the injured list with a groin injury, made his first NHL appearance in relief of starter Chris Osgood during the Red Wings' 5-2 loss Friday at Pittsburgh.

Maple Leafs 5, Avalanche 2

At Toronto, Mike Gartner scored two goals as the Toronto Maple Leafs, playing with a revamped lineup, beat the Colorado Avalanche.

Toronto coach Pat Burns, reacting to Friday night's 3-1 loss in Buffalo, made several line changes and used Damian Rhodes in goal because Colorado started Patrick Roy. Burns said Felix Potvin, his No. 1 goaltender, doesn't excel when Roy is at the other end.

Devils 3, Capitals 1

At East Rutherford, N.J., Bill Guerin scored two goals to lead the New Jersey Devils to a victory over the Washington Capitals.

Reid Simpson also scored for the Devils, who won their second straight game. Joe Juneau scored for the Capitals, who are winless in their last three (0-2-1).

Sabres 7, Canadiens 6

At Montreal, Randy Burridge and Pat LaFontaine scored 18 seconds apart late in the third period to give the Buffalo Sabres a victory over the Montreal Canadiens.

The Canadiens appeared to have the game put away when Pierre Turgeon scored his third goal of the game - and career 300th - to give Montreal a 6-5 lead at 10:47 of the final period.

Islanders 5, Senators 4

At Uniondale, N.Y., Travis Green and Zigmund Palffy each had a goal and an assist as the New York Islanders extended their home unbeaten streak to five games with a victory over the Ottawa Senators.

Marty McInnis, Niklas Andersson and Mathieu Schneider also scored for the Islanders, who are 2-0-3 in their last five games at Nassau Coliseum, their longest unbeaten stretch since a six-game winning streak Feb. 15-March 1, 1994.

Boston 5, Hartford 2

At Boston, Cam Neely and Kevin Stevens came out of the coach's dog house to score a goal apiece in the Boston Bruins' victory over the Hartford Whalers.

Neely and Stevens dressed but sat on the bench for 65 minutes during the Bruins' 4-4 tie in Toronto Wednesday as Coach Steve Kasper sent a "wakeup call" to his team.

Flames 2, Panthers 0

At Calgary, Alberta, Rick Tabaracci stopped 20 shots to lead the Calgary Flames to their third shutout in six games, a victory over the Florida Panthers.

Dean Evason's sixth goal of the season midway through the second period stood up as the winner. Phil Housley added an empty-net goal in the final minute.

Blues 3, Penguins 2

At St. Louis, Dale Hawerchuk scored the game-winner on a breakaway 1:40 into the third period, and goalie Grant Fuhr made 36 saves to lift the St. Louis Blues to a victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Brett Hull had a goal and an assist for the Blues, who played before a season-high 20,193 fans at the Kiel Center.
