Highly successful American Legion baseball coach Barry Sceili, who led two different programs to state finals, died of a heart attack Sunday at age 44.
Credited with the emergence of Taylorsville's summer program, he led the Warriors to five state championships in eight years as head coach - finishing second the other three seasons. He left the post after winning the 1989 title to accept a new job in southern Utah.Six years later, he was lured from coaching retirement and helped lead St. George to the 1995 legion tournament finals. At the time of his death, he was coaching his daughter's soccer team - a job he considered his most important.
Sceili, who earned all-state honors in football and baseball at Granite High, where he graduated in 1970, is survived by his wife Barbara and children Sarah, 10, and Spencer, 5.
