Medical Discoveries Inc., 2040 E. Murray Holladay Road, a company developing antibiotic and antiviral technologies, is on the verge of receiving a patent from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for a product relating to the sterilization or inactivation of infectious agents.
The company received a notice of allowance from the office for a patent titled "Electrically Hydrolyzed Salines as Microbicides for In Vitro Treatment of Contaminated Fluids Containing Blood." The notice is the final stage of patent application, and the patent will be issued following completion of paperwork and payment of a fee.Marlin Toombs, vice president and director, said the notice of allowance relates to the use of MDI-P to sterilize or inactivate infectious agents such as hepatitis or the AIDS virus that may be present in blood or fractional blood products.
The Food and Drug Administration has requested that blood fractionator companies provide them with improved protocols to verify the removal of these infectious agents, and Toombs is optimistic that MDI-P will fill this requirement.
