Tom Lehman and Duffy Waldorf successfully defended their PGA Diners Club match championship with a 2 and 1 victory Sunday over Scott Hoch and Kenny Perry.
Jim Colbert and Bob Murphy won their second consecutive Diners Club Seniors championship with a 3 and 1 win over Vicente Fernandez and Jay Sigel.Dottie Pepper and Juli Inkster snapped Kelly Robbins' and Tammie Green's nine-match winning streak and defeated the two-time defending champions 1-up in the LPGA's portion of the event.
Lehman, the defending British Open champion and a leading contender for player of the year, sank a 9-foot birdie putt on the par 3, 17th hole to clinch the victory.
"We really felt happy just to be in the final round," Lehman said. "Duffy just played great golf all week. We wouldn't have been in the finals without his play."
Lehman overcame inconsistent putting in the first two rounds to card seven birdies in 17 holes Sunday.
"It is nice to finish the year off on a winning note," Lehman said. "Especially after I didn't play well in the first three matches."
Waldorf recorded one of his three birdies at the par 5, 16th hole to move the team to 2-up with two holes to play. His 12-foot birdie putt forced Hoch and Perry to win both of the final holes to force a playoff.
"I'm really happy with the way I played," Waldorf said. "I knew if I could get rid of most of the pain in my back I'd be fine."
Colbert and Murphy were one down going into the par 3, 12th hole. Murphy won the hole with a 10-foot birdie to square the match.
Colbert sank a 22-footer at the 13th for birdie to go ahead in the match. Colbert then rolled in a 20-foot birdie putt at 14 to give he and Murphy a 2-up lead.
With Sigel just six feet from the hole at the par 4, 15th hole, Colbert sank a 25-foot birdie putt. Sigel made his birdie to halve the hole.
All four players parred the 16th. After Fernandez missed his birdie attempt at 17, Fernandez and Sigel conceded the match.
Pepper's 8-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole slammed the door on the defending champs.
"We played the last three holes today like we've played all week," Pepper said. "It took us that long to get going today."
Inkster had given her team the 1-up lead they never relinquished with a 18-foot birdie putt at the 16th.
Each winning team will split the $220,000 first prize. Each losing team split $120,000.
